Anne with an E

Like all mornings these days, I woke up wide awake at 5:00 AM. After 30 minutes of willing myself to sleep in on my first day of Spring Break, I accepted defeat and went downstairs for my new tradition: breakfast, tea, and a movie. This morning I popped in an old favorite, Anne of Green Gables. On loan from a friend, these movies hold very dear memories for me. I read and reread all of the books when I was 8, and would talk to my reflection in the window, wear my hair in braids, and call all my buddies "bosom friends" as a result. Naturally, I love the movies since they are so similar to the books (Green Gables & Avonlea, anyway), so it has been wonderful to watch them again.

I did my best this morning, but I couldn't hold back the tears when Matthew died. That man is so wonderful; I feel like he's my own grandfather. I get so mad at that stupid cow...why didn't it just move?!

I don't quite remember my favorite part in the movie (besides the sunbursts at the end of the whole thing - o la la!), but the best part in the series for me was when Anne returns home from her job in the second book. She sits on her bed and remembers all her memories at Green Gables, many involving Matthew and Gil, of course. I remember feeling such a sense of bittersweetness (not a word, but it works). She had come so far, lost so much, and gained such wisdom about love, life, and family. You can't help but reflect on your own life, which is what great books do.

Tomorrow I will watch Anne of Avonlea and hopefully endure those awful Pringles...ick.

Off to buy plants! Don't you love this rain?
